John
Edward Caldwell, son of the late George and Elmira Caldwell, was
born and reared in Newberry County.He attended the public schools in
Newberry. As a student athlete, he lettered in football, baseball,
basketball and track.
He
furthered his education at Benedict College, Columbia, South
Carolina. There he received the Bachelor of Science Degree in
Chemistry and Mathematics. While attending Benedict, he starred in
three sports: football, baseball and track.
He
is a veteran, who served during peacetime in the United States Army.
While he was in the military, he was assigned to the Redstone Arsenal
of the U.S. Army Missile Command as a Missile Mechanic.
Mr.
Caldwell is a former school teacher, who taught high school math and
science. He was also employed by Independent Life and Accident
Insurance Company for thirty-one years, having retired in 1996. He
was the first black Staff Sales Manager in the State of South
Carolina. In 1984 at the Sales Seminar in Las Vegas, Mr. Caldwell was
one of four persons honored with the Civic Award for outstanding
services rendered, having been chosen from a field of 3,800 employees
for this unique honor. Currently he is self-employed as the owner and
CEO of J.E. Caldwell Properties.
He
is a member of numerous organizations including:
32nd
degree Mason.
Shriner.
One
of the first blacks elected to Newberry County Memorial Hospital
Board of Trustees on which he served or twelve years. He held each
office on that Board for a period of time, which led to his selection
as the first black Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
Past
member of the Visiting Board of Trustees of Piedmont Technical College.
Past
member of the Midlands Human Resource Board.
Past
member of the United Way of the Midlands.
Past
member of the State Community Block Grant Board.
Past
President and member of the Newberry County Benedict College Alumni Club.
Board
member of the National Association of Counties in 2000.
Past
President of the County Governmental Association.
The
first black elected to serve as a member of the Newberry County
Council, and he has served continuously on Council for the past
twenty-two years.
Chairman
of Newberry County Council from 1997 through 2002.
Member
of the Board of Commissioners of GLEAMNS Human Resources Commission.
Past
member of Overall Economic Development Board.
Past
coordinator for Newberry County Negro College Fund.
Recognized
in Who's Who Among Black Leaders in 1988.
Elected
as a member of the South Carolina Association of Counties Board of
Directors for a term commencing August 2004 and expiring August 2008.
Mr.
Caldwell is a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Newberry, South
Carolina, where he has served as chairman of the Deacon Board and as
Treasurer. He is a major contributor to various charitable organizations.
Mr.
Caldwell is married to the former Patricia Henderson of Newberry,and
they have one son, Sean, and one granddaughter, Brittany Shadday.
