How long do I have to pay my taxes before the property is sold?
All delinquent taxes must be paid by 5:00 pm on the Friday prior to sale. No payments will be received the day of the Tax Sale.
Can anyone pay my taxes? If they do, will they own my property?
Newberry County cannot prevent someone from paying your property taxes; however, their payment does not grant them ownership in any way.
I purchased property this year, but the tax bill is in the previous owner’s name. Why?
Tax records reflect the owner of record as of January 1st of the tax year. The tax notice will reflect your name the following year.You can verify current ownership records by contacting the Assessor's Office.
Why am I responsible for paying taxes on property I just bought?
The taxes follow the property, not the individual. Verifying whether property has taxes due is strongly recommended prior to purchasing. Newberry County does not decide the responsible party. The Seller and the Buyer must have an agreement as to who will be responsible for paying the taxes.
I have not received a tax bill for my real estate. Can I have the penalties waived?
A request for the Auditor to abate penalties can only be made if there is evidence that an error has been made by Newberry County.
When are taxes considered delinquent?
Taxes are considered delinquent if not paid by March 17th of each year, unless that day falls on a holiday or weekend.
I own property with several other owners. Can we each submit our share for payment?
Unfortunately, Newberry County does not accept partial payments. One tax notice is issued for the entire amount due. It is the responsibility of all owners to determine how the taxes will be paid.
Can I pay half of my taxes now and half later, or can I get an extension to pay my taxes?
Newberry County does not accept partial payments. The Delinquent Tax Collector’s office does not have the authority to grant any extensions on payment. State statute mandates that a County must sell all properties with delinquent taxes.
